nordmedia expands cooperation with Canada

From coast to coast across the Atlantic: New co-productions with Nova Scotia

nordmedia has signed a letter of intent with Screen Nova Scotia to promote co-productions between the regions of Nova Scotia and Lower Saxony/Bremen as part of its collaboration with the Atlantic International Film Festival (AIFF) in Halifax.

Screen Nova Scotia is the film commission for the province of Nova Scotia and the local association that supports film, television and media productions in the region. nordmedia and Screen Nova Scotia aim to inform their respective regions about co-production opportunities, bring together potential co-production partners with projects in their regions and support cooperation. The Atlantic International Film Festival and the International Film Festival Emden/Norderney, which is supported by nordmedia, have declared their willingness to cooperate to provide a platform for filmmakers from Nova Scotia and Lower Saxony/Bremen to connect with each other and showcase their talent.

The new partnership is part of nordmedia’s initiative to strengthen promotion of international co-productions.

Thomas Schäffer, CEO nordmedia said: "International co-productions are an essential and increasingly important part of nordmedia's film funding. They not only play a key role in cultural exchange, but also generate larger budgets for the realisation of film projects and boost a regional filmmaker’s status. The leap across the Atlantic expands our reach beyond Scandinavia and the Netherlands, our closest neighbour."

Laura Mackenzie, CEO Screen Nova Scotia said:  "International co-production is a vital tool for Nova Scotia's Producers to complete their financing.  With International co-production treaties between Canada and 59 other Countries around the world, Nova Scotia is seeking natural co-production partners, with similarly aligned production values said Laura Mackenzie, Executive Director, Screen Nova Scotia.  nordmedia is an ideal co-production partner, so we're excited to foster greater relationships between our Producers as a result of this partnership."

At Berlinale 2025, nordmedia will once again host the Coast to Coast Chat event in collaboration with International Film Festival Emden Norderney. The event will feature co-production talks between producers from Lower Saxony and Bremen and their counterparts from the Canadian province of Nova Scotia.

Edzard Wagenaar, Festival Director of the Emden-Norderney International Film Festival said: "We are delighted that our joint initiative with Canada, which we launched last year, is not only bearing fruit at the festival level, but that Screen Nova Scotia and nordmedia have now also reached an agreement on promoting idea sharing and co-productions. This will certainly have a lasting effect in the coming years and will hopefully provide a wide range of impulses for filmmakers and festivals in Lower Saxony/Bremen and Atlantic Canada."
